Heat Builds Toward 90 in Ithaca and Watkins Glen Today

Stepping outside this morning feels like walking into a greenhouse — dew points are running high across the board, with Corning, Elmira, and Bath all sitting at 100% humidity even as skies are partly cloudy to mainly clear. That heavy, thick air is only going to intensify as the day unfolds.

Temperatures this morning are in the low-to-mid 60s regionwide, and today’s warming trend will be notable. Afternoon highs push into the mid-to-upper 80s across the lakes — 87° in Geneva, 88° in Canandaigua, and 89° for both Ithaca and Watkins Glen. With humidity climbing through the day, the National Weather Service is flagging heat indices that could reach the upper 80s to lower 90s across most lower elevations. Those along the western Finger Lakes corridor could touch the mid-90s on the feels-like scale by mid-afternoon.

One thing worth watching: the NWS Buffalo discussion notes that a developing Lake Erie lake breeze boundary this afternoon could spark scattered showers and storms across the western Southern Tier — areas near Corning and Bath have the best early shot at that activity. Most of that fizzles after sunset as daytime heating fades.

Overnight lows settle near 64° in Geneva, remaining warm and muggy.

Looking ahead: Thursday stays hot and humid — another round of highs in the upper 80s — before showers and scattered thunderstorms arrive Thursday afternoon through Friday. Behind that system, Friday into the weekend brings a brief cooldown with highs near 79° Saturday and Sunday before warmth rebounds by early next week.
