The Flood Watch that went up at 2:41 this morning is the thing I keep coming back to on this soggy Monday — the NWS in Binghamton has flagged Chemung County, which puts Elmira and Corning squarely in the warning zone through Tuesday at 8:00 AM. The setup is straightforward: a frontal zone has stalled just south of the region and isn’t in any hurry to move. That boundary keeps drawing moisture northward, with the most persistent rain collecting across the southern valleys.
At 6 AM, conditions are gray and damp from one end of the lakes to the other. Penn Yan is already picking up light drizzle under a nearly saturated 88% humidity. Corning and Bath are sitting at 100% humidity with calm winds — the kind of thick, still air that holds moisture close to the ground. Highs today will be modest across the board, topping out near 74° in Corning and Elmira, 76° in Geneva and Ithaca, and 77° in Auburn and Canandaigua.
The afternoon won’t bring much relief. Drizzle and low clouds persist, with any heavier bursts of rain remaining most likely south of the main lakes. The frontal zone begins to shift southeast Tuesday and especially Tuesday night, finally allowing drier air to filter in by Wednesday. Overnight lows tonight stay near the mid-60s region-wide.
Looking ahead, Wednesday shapes up as the welcome break in the pattern — Geneva climbs to near 84° under mainly clear skies. Thursday brings the next round of moisture with highs pushing toward 87°, followed by a wetter Friday and weekend with highs in the low 80s and shower chances returning.
