I’m watching a genuine summer heat-up unfold across the Finger Lakes this week — and the NWS Buffalo office is already flagging the potential for heat index values in the mid-90s by week’s end. It’s a story worth following closely as the week progresses.
This morning is a pleasant start, with skies mainly clear to partly cloudy and temperatures sitting in the mid-50s regionwide. Geneva reads 56° at 6 AM, and Ithaca and Watkins Glen are right there with it. Humidity is on the higher side — Geneva is at 93% — but the light northwest winds will help keep any early mugginess in check. Sunrise was at 5:29 AM, and we’re heading for a long, warm day.
Through the morning, clouds will gradually thicken as high pressure slides east and a ridge builds across the Great Lakes. Highs this afternoon push to around 82° in Geneva, Canandaigua, and Auburn, with the southern valleys around Elmira and Corning likely touching 83°. Penn Yan, warmed by Keuka Lake’s stored heat, could be the region’s warm spot. Winds remain light — generally under 10 mph — so it will feel genuinely warm out there this afternoon.
Tonight stays mild, with lows holding near 56° in Geneva. No rain expected.
Tuesday turns up the dial further. Warm air advection strengthens as the ridge axis crosses the region, and highs could approach 90° in spots. Wednesday and Thursday bring increasing clouds and the return of showers and thunderstorms as the ridge breaks down — precipitation chances climb into the 60–80% range mid-to-late week, with a thunderstorm possible Friday. The first cool break arrives Sunday, with highs dropping back to the mid-60s. Keep an eye on this week’s evolution.
