I’m watching what looks like a classic early-June setup unfold across the Finger Lakes this week — a pleasant Sunday morning giving way to a prolonged and increasingly intense heat build that could push heat index values into the mid-90s by Thursday and Friday. Today is the last truly comfortable day of the stretch, so make the most of it.
Right now, skies are clear across the region, with temperatures in the low 60s and humidity running high after a dewy night. Expect clouds to increase through the morning hours as high pressure drifts eastward, but rain chances today are slim — just 9% — and any sprinkles would be brief and minor. Highs today reach the mid-70s, with Geneva near 74°, Ithaca near 76°, and Corning and Elmira both pushing toward 77°. Light westerly winds stay under 15 mph. Skies remain overcast through the evening, and overnight lows hold in the low 60s — mild and muggy.
The warming trend picks up Monday as an upper-level ridge builds overhead. Expect highs climbing into the low 80s region-wide, then pushing near 90° by Tuesday. Early-week humidity stays manageable, but by Thursday and Friday, rising dewpoints will push heat index readings into the lower-to-mid 90s — most notably across the western Finger Lakes. Showers and storms become possible by Wednesday night into Thursday, with a better chance of thunderstorm activity Thursday through the weekend.
Stream flows are running at seasonal norms — no flooding concerns heading into the week.
