Katlin Caplinger, 33, of Clifton Springs, was charged with welfare fraud in the fourth degree by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office on April 15.

The investigation began after an Ontario County Department of Social Services Social Welfare Examiner received an anonymous complaint alleging that Caplinger was selling her Department of Social Services benefits. Further investigation determined that Caplinger was receiving Department of Social Services benefits on behalf of a child who was no longer residing in her household. It was found that Caplinger would have received $2,338 less in benefits had she accurately reported the change in household composition.

Caplinger is scheduled to appear in the Town of Hopewell Court at a later date to answer the charge.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
