An ambulance with emergency lights pulls up to a hospital emergency room entrance under a red "EMERGENCY" sign at night.

A Rome man died late Saturday night after being struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Routes 5 and 20 in the Town of Hopewell.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, along with Hopewell Fire Department and Canandaigua Ambulance, responded at approximately 11:23 p.m. to the area of the Econo Lodge Hotel at 4232 Routes 5 and 20 for a reported pedestrian struck.

The Sheriff’s Office said its preliminary investigation determined that 67-year-old William Obernesser was crossing the roadway in a northerly direction when he was struck by a Ford Super Duty pickup truck driven by 25-year-old Aaron Shahin of Farmington.

Obernesser suffered severe internal injuries and was transported to F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Following the crash, Routes 5 and 20 were closed for approximately four hours between Smith Road and County Road 50 while members of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing. No charges have been announced.
