A 65-year-old Canadian man died Saturday evening after falling into the Erie Canal in the Village of Newark.
Newark Police responded to the area of Van Buren Street just before 6:15 p.m. following a report of a water rescue.
When officers arrived, they found a woman searching the water for her significant other. Rescue boats were launched, and emergency crews began searching the canal.
The man was eventually recovered from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the victim had arrived in Newark by boat from Canada with his significant other and two friends. The group had stopped in the village to enjoy sightseeing when the man reportedly slipped and fell into the water between the boat and the shoreline.
Police have not yet released the man’s identity pending notification of family.
The incident remains under investigation.
