A longtime Canandaigua restaurant is preparing to close its doors after nearly five decades in business.

In a message shared on social media, the family behind Pontillo’s Pizzeria announced the difficult decision to close the restaurant, citing circumstances beyond their control.

“After nearly 50 years of serving the Canandaigua community, it is with heavy hearts that we share the news that we will be closing our doors,” the statement read.

The owners said the decision was not made lightly and followed extensive thought and consideration.

Over the years, Pontillo’s became more than just a local pizza restaurant, according to the family. In their farewell message, they reflected on the generations of customers who dined there, celebrating birthdays, graduations, championships, family gatherings, and other milestones.

The family thanked the community for its decades of support, noting that many customers became like family over the years.

“We have had the privilege of watching children grow up, graduate, get married, and bring in children of their own,” the statement said. “Generations of families have gathered around our tables, celebrated milestones, and made Pontillo’s a part of their traditions.”

The owners also expressed gratitude for the loyalty and support they received from customers throughout the restaurant’s nearly 50-year history.

“Thank you for every order placed, every recommendation made, every smiling face that walked through our doors, and for the love you have shown us throughout the years,” the family wrote.

No specific closing date was announced in the social media post.

The family said that while the restaurant’s chapter in Canandaigua is coming to an end, the memories and relationships built over the years will remain with them forever.
