A 16-year-old driver was killed Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer in Seneca County.

New York State Police in Waterloo say the collision happened around 8:55 a.m. on State Route 414 in the Town of Tyre.

Investigators determined the teen, from Clyde, was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox southbound when, while negotiating a slight curve, the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a 1985 Peterbilt semi-tractor.

The truck was operated by a 48-year-old Romulus man. Troopers say he attempted to avoid the crash and applied his brakes, but was unable to prevent the collision. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.

The teen, who was the sole occupant of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene.  In a separate news release, North Seneca Ambulance identified the victim as Jaiden Zimmerman. The organization stated Jaiden was a dedicated and hardworking member of North Seneca Ambulance who gave countless hours in service to the agency and the community it serves

State Police say the tractor-trailer was hauling an empty trailer at the time. A post-crash inspection was conducted by the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, and the driver showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

The investigation remains ongoing.
