What is a traffic garden, and will Auburn soon get one?
Auburn City Council will vote Thursday on a resolution authorizing the city to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Cayuga County to create a traffic garden at the former skatepark site at Casey Park in Auburn. A traffic garden is a child-friendly mock roadway providing children a space to learn bicycle and pedestrian safety skills.
According to a memorandum, the Cayuga County Health Department will fund and complete the design, materials, painting, signage, and installation of the traffic garden using state grant funding through the New York State Department of Health’s Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Program, a program aimed at creating accessible recreational opportunities for children.
If approved, the city’s role in the project would be limited to minor pavement repairs, installation of white pavement striping, and assisting with signage installation, meaning there would be little cost to the city.
Since the creation of the new skate park, the former paved site has remained unused by the city.
City Council will vote on the matter at its Thursday meeting at 5:00p at City Hall.
