A major infrastructure project aimed at improving a heavily traveled section of the New York State Thruway is underway in Onondaga and Cayuga counties.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of the $98 million project, which will rebuild approximately 61 lane miles of Interstate 90 between just east of Exit 39 near Syracuse and just west of Exit 40 in Weedsport. The stretch carries about 38,000 vehicles each day.
The work includes full-depth reconstruction of portions of the eastbound and westbound Thruway, where existing concrete pavement will be removed and replaced with warm-mix asphalt. Other sections will receive extensive concrete repairs, including replacement of deteriorated pavement, crack sealing and diamond grinding to create a smoother driving surface.
Additional improvements include upgraded guiderails, new reflective pavement markings and the installation of shoulder rumble strips designed to improve driver safety.
Governor Hochul said the investment continues New York’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure while supporting economic growth and local communities.
Cayuga County Legislature Chair Jonathan Anna praised the project, thanking Governor Kathy Hochul for investing in the region’s transportation infrastructure. Anna said the improvements will enhance safety, improve travel and strengthen a key transportation corridor that supports residents, businesses and the local economy. He added that the county appreciates the state’s continued commitment to infrastructure investments that keep Cayuga County connected and moving forward.
The project is being completed by Slate Hill Constructors of Warners following a competitive bidding process. Construction is expected to continue through the fall of 2028.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect periodic lane closures during construction.
