Weekend Outlook: Drizzle Friday, then clearing and warming ahead

Stepping outside this morning, the humidity is the first thing you’ll notice — nearly every station across the region is sitting at 94% or higher, and Canandaigua, Penn Yan, and Bath are already picking up some light drizzle as a slow-moving cold front stalls just to our north. That boundary, according to the NWS Buffalo office, has been draped nearly stationary across southern Lake Ontario since overnight, and it’s going to be the dominant story today.

Expect a damp, gray morning across most of the region, with scattered light drizzle possible through mid-morning. The front’s sluggish southward drift means the southern Finger Lakes — including the terrain around Corning and Elmira — could see a few stronger thunderstorms this afternoon, roughly between 1 PM and 6 PM. NWS forecasters note the potential for isolated gusty winds and heavy rainfall with any storms that develop, though severe parameters are not particularly favorable. The window is relatively short, and the setup isn’t a widespread severe threat. Highs today top out near 79° to 82° across the region.

Tonight, skies begin to clear as the front finally pushes through, with lows settling back near 63° to 68°.

Looking ahead: Saturday clears out nicely with a high near 80° and a cooler overnight near 59°. Sunday stays pleasant near 82°. The more interesting story is next week — Monday and Tuesday bring a warmup into the upper 80s to low 90s, with Geneva reaching 92° by Tuesday. That heat eases slightly by mid-next week, with highs back to the low-to-mid 80s by Thursday.
