Scattered light drizzle is already showing up across the southern end of the region this evening — Elmira is reporting dense drizzle at 86°, and Corning and Watkins Glen are seeing light drizzle and slight rain even as temperatures hold in the mid-to-upper 80s. That moisture is the leading edge of an approaching cold front pushing in from Ontario.
The NWS Buffalo office has flagged a Marginal Risk for strong to severe thunderstorms across western New York this afternoon and evening, with the greatest storm coverage expected along and south of Lake Ontario. Any stronger cells could produce damaging wind gusts or small hail before the front clears through overnight. The same system raises the possibility of isolated flash flooding, though streams across the region remain well within normal levels tonight.
Lows will settle near 68° in Geneva and Ithaca, a bit lower — around 65° — in the southern tier valleys near Bath and Corning. Friday sees temperatures pull back noticeably, with highs near 80° under showery skies. The weekend dries out further, with partly cloudy to clear conditions, highs in the low 80s Saturday and climbing back toward the upper 80s by early next week.
