A gorgeous weekend warm-up with a heat wave building by midweek

My eye this morning is squarely on next week — because what’s coming after this pleasant weekend is one of the more significant heat events the Finger Lakes has seen in a while. But first, today is simply a nice late-June Saturday.

At 59° across most of the region under mainly clear to partly cloudy skies, it’s a calm and quiet start. Light winds and high humidity — readings hovering at 96–98% at most stations — may briefly feel a bit muggy, but that should lift quickly after sunrise. Today shapes up beautifully: partly cloudy skies with a gentle southwest breeze, highs near 80° in Geneva, Canandaigua, and Penn Yan, and up to 83–84° in Ithaca and Watkins Glen. For IMSA weekend at The Glen, today’s qualifying and support races are set up perfectly — comfortable temperatures, no rain in sight, and light winds throughout the afternoon.

Evening looks equally pleasant. Skies stay partly cloudy after sunset around 8:50 PM, temperatures slip back into the upper 60s by 9 or 10 PM, and overnight lows settle near 59°. The NWS Buffalo office notes an ideal radiational cooling setup tonight, which accounts for those relatively low overnight readings despite the humidity.

Sunday’s IMSA Six Hours of The Glen gets another fine day — partly cloudy, highs near 82°, and just a 1% rain chance. Race traffic on Routes 14 and 414 will at least be moving in good weather.

Looking further ahead: Monday builds to the mid-80s, then the pattern shifts dramatically. A major ridge amplifying over the Ohio Valley pushes 90-plus-degree heat into the Finger Lakes Tuesday through Thursday — highs of 93° to 96° are forecast, with thunderstorm chances arriving Tuesday and lingering through the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The NWS has flagged this as a period where heat-related headlines are likely. Stay tuned as those details sharpen early next week.
