Weekly Outlook: Overcast Tuesday gives way to a warm, stormy stretch

Something worth noting before the week gets away from us — the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen is now just five days out, and the forecast for race Sunday is looking considerably better than what the middle of the week will bring. Worth keeping in mind as travel plans come together.

Today opens gray and still across the region. Geneva is sitting at 57° under a solid overcast at 5:45 this morning, humidity near saturation, with a light northwest breeze doing little to stir things. Skies stay cloudy through the morning hours, but the good news is that precipitation chances today are essentially nil — the overcast is a holdover from overnight flow, not a rain-maker. Temperatures climb through the morning and reach the lower 70s by early afternoon, with highs near 73° in Geneva, Auburn, and Canandaigua, and a touch warmer — around 75° — in Ithaca and Corning. Winds remain light all day, so it’ll feel comfortable once the sun makes any progress against the cloud deck.

Wednesday looks like the best day of the stretch: mainly clear skies, highs near 76°, and a pleasant northwesterly flow keeping humidity in check.

The pattern shifts Thursday. A warm front drapes across western New York and tracks northward, bringing showers and the potential for thunderstorms, particularly Thursday afternoon as a shortwave moves through during peak heating. The National Weather Service in Buffalo notes some timing uncertainty — the warm front’s exact position will determine whether the region sees a more continuous rain day or catches breaks between rounds. Either way, have the umbrella ready Thursday and keep an eye on updated forecasts.

Friday carries a lingering drizzle chance — around 39% — with highs near 78°. That’s the start of the IMSA WeatherTech weekend at Watkins Glen International, and early-arriving fans heading up Route 14 should expect some wet pavement. Saturday improves meaningfully, dropping to just a 16% precipitation chance with partly cloudy skies and highs still near 78° — reasonable conditions for qualifying and support races. Race Sunday, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, shapes up as the best day of the weekend: mainly clear, highs near 82°, and only an 8% precip chance. Monday finishes the outlook on a warm note, with mainly clear skies and highs approaching 86°.

Stream flows across the region are running at seasonal norms and nothing worth flagging for outdoor recreation.
