Summer heat peaks today before storms move in for the weekend

I’m watching a remarkably warm Friday shape up across the Finger Lakes before a significant pattern change barrels in this weekend. Enjoy today — it’s going to be one of the better early-June days we’ve seen, and it won’t last long.

Skies are mainly clear this morning with temperatures already in the mid-to-upper 50s regionwide. A southerly flow is pulling in warm, humid air ahead of an approaching trough to our northwest. Clouds will build through the afternoon as that ridge axis shifts east, but rain holds off — expect highs near 88° in Geneva and Ithaca, 87° in Auburn, and around 85° to 86° from Canandaigua to Corning. That’s roughly 15 to 20 degrees above seasonal norms for early June.

Evening stays warm and increasingly murky. Moisture begins pushing in after dark, and the NWS Buffalo office is flagging a chance for showers — and a stray thunderstorm — late tonight as that frontal system approaches.

Saturday is the day to watch. A pre-frontal trough crosses the region ahead of the main cold front, and the setup looks loaded: deep moisture with precipitable water values approaching 1.75 inches, and strong wind shear near 40 knots. The combination means scattered thunderstorms Saturday afternoon could produce locally damaging winds and hail. Rainfall could be heavy in spots. Keep an eye on conditions if you have outdoor plans.

Behind the front, Sunday brings much cooler air — highs dropping into the upper 60s — with lingering drizzle possible. Next week settles back into the mid-70s to low 80s with another chance for showers arriving around Wednesday and Thursday.
