A Lyons man is facing a petit larceny charge after allegedly stealing a custom motorcycle seat cover outside the Lyons Department of Motor Vehicles.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Rufus Hall was arrested Friday following an investigation into the incident.

Deputies said a woman had just finished operating her motorcycle and parked it in front of the DMV when Hall allegedly approached the vehicle and smelled the seat before leaving the area. Authorities said Hall returned a short time later, removed the motorcycle’s custom seat cover, valued at approximately $140, and ran off.

Deputies later located Hall nearby wearing the same clothing seen during the theft. The seat cover was recovered and returned to its owner.

Hall was taken to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for processing before being transported to the Wayne County Jail for fingerprinting and photographs. He was later released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the charge in the Town of Lyons Court at a later date.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
