A Pennsylvania man has been charged with felony firearm possession after Ithaca police recovered a handgun during a welfare check earlier this month.

According to the Ithaca Police Department, officers responded to the 200 block of Cherry Street at approximately 12:12 a.m. on June 14 for a reported welfare check. Police said officers investigated the complaint and determined there were no safety concerns involving the individuals at the scene.

During the investigation, however, officers located and recovered a Taurus handgun from a vehicle being operated by 25-year-old Garrett Westbrook of New Albany, Pennsylvania. The firearm was seized as evidence while the investigation continued.

On Wednesday, at approximately 10:50 a.m., Westbrook was arrested and charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E felony.

Westbrook was arraigned in Ithaca City Court before Judge Peacock and was released on an appearance ticket.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
