Steuben County has recognized the extraordinary efforts of first responders whose coordinated actions helped save the life of a county resident who suffered a cardiac arrest on the morning of May 16.

During a recent Public Safety and Corrections Committee meeting, Steuben County Public Safety Director Timothy Marshall and EMS Coordinator Brandon Rosettie presented commendations to the emergency responders whose teamwork led to the patient’s survival.

According to county officials, the Steuben County 911 Center received a report of an unconscious person at approximately 3:26 a.m. on May 16. Emergency dispatchers quickly recognized the seriousness of the situation, dispatched the appropriate responders, and began providing CPR instructions over the phone.

Officials said the response highlighted the strength of the county’s emergency response system. From the initial 911 call through the response by law enforcement, EMS personnel, paramedics, LifeNet, and hospital staff, every step in the chain of survival contributed to the successful outcome.

The American Heart Association estimates that only about 4 to 9 percent of people who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survive with full neurological recovery, making the patient’s recovery especially significant.

“This is how a 911 system is supposed to work,” Marshall said. “From the patient’s family member making that first call, to our 911 dispatchers providing CPR instructions, the responding police officers, EMS personnel, paramedics, LifeNet crew, and the hospital staff—everyone performed their role with incredible professionalism. It truly was a team effort that saved a life.”

Those recognized for their efforts included:

  • Steuben County EMS Paramedic Jackie Lewis
  • Bath Police Department Sgt. Dustin Johnson and Officer Michael Harrington
  • Steuben County 911 Communications dispatchers Brady Hill, Ashley Schwingel, Madeline Zanghi, Bobbi Shollenberger, and Nickole Hively
  • Bath Volunteer Ambulance Corps members Elizabeth Charland, Erinn Smith, Michael Fiordo, Michael Hann, Kendra Gay, and Aubrey Marsh
  • New York State Police Troopers Trenten Merrill and Seth Maldonado
  • LifeNet 7-7 crew members Ralph Wilcox and Rob Shaw
