A new bronze monument honoring the soldiers of the 111th New York Infantry Regiment will soon be installed in Lyons, recognizing the sacrifices of local men who fought during the Civil War.

Created by nationally recognized sculptor Gary Casteel, the monument, titled “True Valor at Gettysburg,” was inspired by the story of four color bearers from the 111th New York Infantry who were killed during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Sponsored by the Wayne County Historical Society, the monument is intended to commemorate not only the regiment’s heroism at Gettysburg but also the thousands of men from upstate New York who volunteered to serve during the Civil War.

Installation of the bronze sculpture is scheduled for July or August, with a public dedication ceremony planned for Aug. 22.

The Wayne County Historical Society is inviting living history reenactors and demonstrators to participate in the dedication. Those interested in setting up displays are asked to notify organizers in advance.

The dedication ceremony is free and open to the public. Additional information about the monument project is available through the Wayne County Historical Society.
