The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office recently recognized two of its newest Road Patrol Deputies during a traditional badge pinning ceremony as they prepare to begin the final phase of their law enforcement training.

Deputies Austin Cayward and Alexandria Moody received their Ontario County Sheriff’s Office badges during a ceremony attended by family members, fellow deputies, agency leadership and staff from the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy.

The badge pinning ceremony is a longstanding law enforcement tradition that marks a significant milestone in an officer’s career before entering field training.

“Earning the opportunity to wear the badge reflects months of dedication, hard work, and commitment,” Sheriff David Cirencione said. “Austin and Alexandria have demonstrated the qualities we look for in our deputies, and we are excited to welcome them into the next phase of their training. Our Field Training Officer Program will provide the experience and mentorship needed to prepare them for a successful career serving the residents of Ontario County.”

Both deputies recently completed the academic portion of their law enforcement training through the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy and will now begin the Sheriff’s Office’s Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.

During field training, each deputy will work alongside experienced Road Patrol Deputies, receiving hands-on instruction and mentorship while responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, enforcing traffic laws and interacting with the public. The program is designed to transition recruits from classroom instruction to real-world law enforcement and serves as the final phase of their academy training.

The Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy’s 2026 class includes recruits from the sheriff’s offices in Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties, reflecting a regional partnership in training future law enforcement officers.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office congratulated Deputies Cayward and Moody on reaching the milestone and wished them success as they begin field training.
