A Rochester man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting and strangling a Steuben County sheriff’s deputy who was attempting to arrest him following a domestic incident.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested 57-year-old Daniel Beal on July 16 after investigating a reported fight in Wayland.
Investigators allege Beal assaulted another person and forcibly stole money from the victim. When a deputy attempted to take him into custody, Beal allegedly resisted arrest, assaulted and strangled the deputy, and then attempted to flee.
Beal was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree strangulation, second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
The alleged robbery victim was taken to a local medical facility for treatment. The deputy was also treated at a medical facility and has since been released.
Beal was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and taken to the Steuben County Jail. Bail was set at $50,000 cash or $200,000 bond.
The charges are accusations, and Beal is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
