The historic Seneca County Courthouse Complex, known locally as the “Three Bears,” will be the focus of a community celebration next month as a new state historic marker is unveiled.
The Friends of the Three Bears will host a dedication ceremony on Sunday, May 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the lawn of the complex at Three Bears Complex.
The event marks the installation of a New York State Historic Marker sponsored by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, recognizing Ovid’s historical designation as a half-shire. Organizers will also celebrate the completion of restoration work on the “Papa Bear” building, including improvements that make it fully accessible.
Originally constructed in 1845 and 1860, the Three Bears buildings have served the community in various roles over the years. Since 2003, the Friends of the Three Bears have worked to preserve and restore the site, which now functions as a hub for arts, culture, tourism, and community events.
The ceremony will also recognize the contributions of local residents and supporters who helped make the restoration efforts possible.
The afternoon will include live music, refreshments, children’s activities, and ice cream from Cayuga Creamery. Attendees can also enjoy wine tastings from Hosmer Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, and Boundary Breaks Vineyard.
Organizers say the event will be held rain or shine and is open to the public.
