The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on the lookout for a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be sheriff’s deputies and demand money for a family member’s bail.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, several Ontario County residents have reported receiving calls from someone posing as an Ontario County Sheriff’s deputy. The caller requests payment through various methods, claiming the money is needed to post bail for a relative.

Officials emphasized that the Sheriff’s Office, Ontario County Court, and any other court will never call people to demand or request bail payments over the phone.

Residents who receive one of these calls are urged not to provide personal information or send money. Instead, they should hang up immediately and contact the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office directly at (585) 394-4560 to verify the situation or report the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office is also encouraging residents to share the warning with family and friends to help prevent others from becoming victims of the scam.
