Visitors to Watkins Glen State Park will once again have full access to the park’s iconic Gorge Trail after state officials officially opened the new Sentry Bridge on Wednesday, just ahead of the busy Fourth of July weekend.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced the completion of the $7.5 million bridge replacement project, restoring access to both the Gorge Trail and Southern Rim Trail after nearly a year of construction.
Parks Commissioner Kathy Moser said reopening the bridge before one of the park’s busiest weekends of the year was a significant milestone.
“We are thrilled to welcome visitors back to the full Watkins Glen State Park experience with the opening of the new Sentry Bridge ahead of Independence Day weekend,” Moser said. “This project restores access to one of the most breathtaking gorge trails in the country while ensuring this critical infrastructure will serve park visitors for generations to come.”
The new stainless steel bridge replaces the aging Sentry Bridge, which was closed after engineers determined it needed to be replaced because of unstable rock conditions in the gorge.

Designed by New York-based firms schlaich bergermann partner and Snøhetta, the new structure is approximately 100 tons lighter than its predecessor, reducing pressure on the surrounding rock formations. The bridge features a half-arch design anchored to the stronger northern wall of the gorge and incorporates stone recovered from the original bridge into portions of the approach.
State Parks officials said the new bridge is designed to withstand the harsh gorge environment for more than 100 years. It also offers improved sightlines, a wider deck to ease pedestrian congestion, and greater resistance to erosion.
With the bridge now open, visitors once again have access to all 19 waterfalls along the Gorge Trail, including Cavern Cascade and the historic 120-step Couch’s Staircase leading to the South Pavilion and swimming pool.

Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce President Nigar Hale called the bridge opening an important milestone during the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
“The Sentry Bridge connects visitors to the world-renowned Gorge Trail, the signature experience that has made Watkins Glen State Park one of New York’s most beloved destinations,” Hale said. “This project strengthens the visitor experience, enhances public safety, and preserves access to the breathtaking beauty of Watkins Glen State Park for generations to come.”
Finger Lakes Regional Commission Chair Sharon Miller said the investment ensures future generations will continue to enjoy one of New York’s premier natural attractions.
Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most visited state parks in New York, attracting visitors from across the state, the nation and around the world each year.
