The New York State Department of Transportation is revising plans for the ongoing culvert replacement project that has closed a section of State Route 21 in the Town of South Bristol.

According to an update shared by the Town of South Bristol, DOT engineers are reviewing the design for a retaining wall to better accommodate the steep slopes surrounding the project site.

Work began Wednesday to remove backfill as crews prepare for the updated design. Town officials said the culvert itself is functioning as intended.

The DOT is also working to improve traffic management around the closure. A larger warning sign, similar to one already installed in South Bristol, is planned for Naples to alert truck drivers to the closure earlier. Officials hope the additional signage will help prevent large trucks from missing the current detour signs and having to turn around near the work zone.

The DOT expects to provide an updated timeline for completion of the project next week. The section of Route 21 remains closed while construction continues.
