Motorists traveling between Geneva and Canandaigua should expect delays beginning next week as the New York State Department of Transportation begins a pavement improvement project along Routes 5 and 20
Starting Monday, portions of Routes 5 and 20 between the Geneva and Canandaigua city lines will be reduced to a single lane with alternating traffic controlled by flaggers. The lane closures will be in effect weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through August 7.
The work will begin at the Geneva city line and progress west toward Canandaigua through the towns of Geneva, Seneca and Hopewell.
DOT officials are advising drivers to expect travel delays and consider using alternate routes when possible.
Motorists are also reminded to use caution in work zones by reducing speed and following the directions of flaggers. Under New York law, fines are doubled for speeding in work zones, and drivers convicted of two or more work zone speeding violations could have their driver’s license suspended.
