The Ithaca Common Council has approved the creation of four new positions to support the city’s ROOTS (Responders Offering Outreach Trust and Support) program.
The action, taken during the council’s July 8 meeting, establishes one full-time Working Supervisor, one full-time Community Responder, and two part-time Community Responders.
The ROOTS program is designed to provide non-law enforcement responses to behavioral health concerns, quality-of-life issues, housing instability, and other community needs. The program will work alongside existing public safety agencies and community service partners to connect residents with appropriate resources and support.
City officials said initial startup funding for the new positions is already available through previously appropriated funds. The program is expected to expand the city’s ability to respond to situations that may be better addressed through outreach and social services rather than traditional law enforcement.
