An inmate is dead following an altercation Tuesday night at Collins Correctional Facility in Erie County, according to New York State Police.
State Police said the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) notified investigators at approximately 11 p.m. on July 21 after an incarcerated individual died following an incident inside the prison.
A preliminary investigation determined that one incarcerated individual allegedly attacked another inside a Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU), causing serious physical injuries.
The victim, identified as 34-year-old Jose Aponte, was transported to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. The DOCCS Office of Special Investigations is assisting, and the New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded to the facility.
Authorities said the investigation remains active, and no additional information has been released.
