Carl Fitzsimmons has officially secured the Democratic nomination for New York’s 130th Assembly District following one of the closest primary races in the region this year.

Certified results from the Wayne and Monroe County Boards of Elections show the Webster Democrat defeated Williamson’s Joe Lamanna by just 54 votes, 2,113 to 2,059.

The outcome remained uncertain following the June 24 Democratic primary, when Fitzsimmons held a narrow 49-vote lead over Lamanna after all election districts had reported.

Fitzsimmons’ victory was fueled by a strong performance in the Town of Webster, where he received nearly 300 more votes than Lamanna. Lamanna, who was endorsed by the Wayne County Democratic Committee, carried Wayne County by more than 200 votes, but it was not enough to overcome Fitzsimmons’ advantage in Monroe County.

Fitzsimmons will now advance to the November general election, where voters will choose a successor to Republican Assemblyman Brian Manktelow. Manktelow announced in January that he would not seek another term in the Assembly.

The 130th Assembly District encompasses all of Wayne County and the Town of Webster in Monroe County.
