Newark Police have identified the Canadian man who drowned Saturday evening after falling into the Erie Canal.
Police said the victim was 65-year-old John Fiander, a resident of Ontario, Canada.
Officers responded to the area of Van Buren Street shortly before 6:15 p.m. following a report of a water rescue. When police arrived, they found a woman searching the water for her significant other.
Rescue boats were launched, and emergency crews began searching the canal. Fiander was eventually recovered from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, Fiander had traveled to Newark by boat from Canada with his significant other and two friends. The group had stopped in the village for sightseeing when he reportedly slipped and fell into the water between the boat and the shoreline.
The incident remains under investigation.
