The public comment deadline for the Cargill Cayuga Salt Mine’s reclamation permit renewal has been extended to January 19, 2025.
The mine, located under the southern end of Cayuga Lake, spans Tompkins, Cayuga, and Seneca counties. Cargill seeks to renew its five-year permit and modify water storage within the approved mining area, aiming for a minimum 15-year capacity at current inflow rates. The permit covers 13,579 surface and underground acres.
