The Cayuga County Office for the Aging says fewer Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons will be available this year after a reduction in federal funding.
According to the office, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service reduced funding for the program after coupon distribution events had already been scheduled. As a result, the county received significantly fewer coupons than in previous years. Officials say coupons will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and once the supply is exhausted, remaining distribution events will be canceled.
Residents are encouraged to check the Cayuga County Office for the Aging’s website and social media pages or call the office to confirm whether a scheduled distribution is still taking place.
Officials acknowledged the impact the funding reduction may have on older adults who rely on the program to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. The office says it is working with community partners to explore alternative solutions.
Anyone wishing to be placed on a waiting list in the event additional coupons become available can contact the Cayuga County Office for the Aging at 315-253-1226.
