The Canandaigua City Fire Department responded to nearly 1,500 emergency incidents during the first six months of 2026, with medical emergencies accounting for nearly half of all calls.
According to the department’s mid-year response summary, firefighters responded to 1,438 incidents between Jan. 1 and June 30.
Medical emergencies made up the largest share of responses, with crews handling 706 EMS calls, or 49% of the total. Firefighters also responded to 42 fire incidents, 108 hazardous conditions, 340 public service calls and 23 technical rescue incidents.
Among the department’s most common emergency responses were 134 breathing emergencies, 61 chest pain calls and 38 suspected strokes.
Crews also investigated 35 downed power lines, responded to 26 reported gas leaks and answered 48 fire alarm activations. Firefighters assisted with 37 lift assists and handled multiple confined space standbys, water rescues, elevator rescues and vehicle extrications.
The department reported that firefighters managed 462 overlapping incidents during the six months, meaning nearly one in every three calls occurred while crews were already committed to another emergency.
Fire officials said the volume of simultaneous calls highlights the importance of maintaining a well-trained and fully prepared department.
The Canandaigua City Fire Department provides fire and emergency services to the City and Town of Canandaigua year-round and thanked its mutual aid partners, Ontario County 911, local government leaders and the community for their continued support.
