Tim Allers has officially secured the Democratic nomination for New York’s 120th Assembly District after defeating fellow Democrat Jim Cannon by just 28 votes.

Election officials in Oswego, Cayuga and Jefferson counties completed their canvass this week, confirming Allers, of Mexico, received 1,116 votes to Cannon’s 1,088.

In a statement posted to social media following the certification of the results, Allers thanked election officials and supporters while emphasizing his commitment to representing the entire district.

“What an experience this race has been so far,” Allers wrote. “Waiting for the final election counts has been an exercise in patience. Thank you to the Board of Elections staff in Oswego, Cayuga, and Jefferson counties for your dedication to our free and fair elections and ensuring that every vote was counted.”

Allers also thanked the volunteers and supporters who helped propel his campaign to victory.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign so far. We could not have pulled off this win without every one of you,” he said. “As for my team, I couldn’t be more proud of the work we’ve done to engage and listen to the people of this district.”

He also thanked Cannon for running and said his campaign will now focus on reaching voters who supported other candidates.

“We look forward to earning the support of the voters who did not vote for us and continuing to build our coalition by listening to the folks in the district where they’re at, making sure that they are heard,” Allers said. “I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for the 120th Assembly District. Let’s get to work.”

Allers now advances to the November general election, where he will face Republican nominee Jim Weatherup, chairman of the Oswego County Legislature.

Both candidates are seeking to succeed longtime Assemblyman Will Barclay, the former Assembly Minority Leader, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection.

The 120th Assembly District includes all of Oswego County and portions of Cayuga and Jefferson counties, including the Cayuga County towns of Ira, Sterling and Victory.
