Boil Water Order Issued for Village of Weedsport

Residents in the Village of Weedsport are under a boil water order after a water main break caused the village’s water system to lose pressure on Tuesday.

Village officials say the pressure loss increases the risk that untreated water and harmful microorganisms could enter the drinking water system.

Until the order is lifted, residents are advised to bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before using it. Alternatively, bottled water certified by the New York State Department of Health may be used.

The boil water order applies to all customers within the Village of Weedsport. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food.

According to officials, harmful microbes in drinking water can cause symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and headaches. Infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be at greater risk of illness. Anyone experiencing persistent symptoms is encouraged to seek medical attention.

Village crews are repairing the damaged water main. Once repairs are complete, water samples will be collected and tested to ensure the system is free of contamination before the order is lifted.

Officials anticipate the boil water order will remain in effect for the next several days. Residents will be notified by the Cayuga County Health Department when it is safe to resume normal water use.

Residents with questions can contact the Village of Weedsport at 315-834-6634 or the Cayuga County Health Department at 315-253-1560.
