Auburn police will be increasing traffic enforcement efforts after the City Council unanimously approved a state traffic safety grant Thursday night.
The grant, which the Auburn Police Department receives annually, will fund additional patrols focused on improving driver safety during the busy summer months.
Speaking on FLX Morning Friday, City Clerk Chuck Mason said the funding allows officers to work extra enforcement shifts targeting common traffic violations.
“That’s kind of a standard grant that the police department is able to take advantage of every year,” Mason said. “The additional funds that come in will be put to use on the roads.”
According to Mason, officers will be watching for distracted driving, including the use of mobile phones behind the wheel, as well as seat belt violations and other traffic safety offenses.
“The officers will be out there for some extra shifts, looking for things like the use of mobile phones, the lack of use of seat belts, things like that,” Mason said. “It gives a little boost to the area, especially in the summertime.”
He added that the additional patrols are intended to encourage motorists to follow the rules of the road and improve safety for everyone traveling through the city.
The resolution authorizing the grant was approved unanimously by the Auburn City Council during its Thursday evening meeting.
