The City of Syracuse has officially opened its new public safety building, honoring the memory of two first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this week for the new Michael E. Jensen & Ethan C. Cunningham Public Safety Building at 1153 West Fayette Street. The event brought together members of the Syracuse Fire Department, Syracuse Police Department, city leaders, elected officials, project partners and community members.
The families of fallen Syracuse Police Officer Michael E. Jensen and Syracuse Firefighter Ethan C. Cunningham attended the ceremony, which city officials said made the dedication especially meaningful.
Jensen was shot and killed by a suspect on April 14, 2024, in the Town of Salina alongside Onondaga County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Michael Hoosock. Cunningham died in Feb. 2017 from injuries sustained while responding to a call.
The new facility is named in recognition of Jensen and Cunningham’s service, sacrifice and lasting legacy.
City officials also recognized the many individuals and organizations involved in planning, designing and constructing the building, including Hueber-Breuer Construction, city leadership, design and construction teams, and members of both the Syracuse Police and Fire departments.
Officials said the new public safety building represents a long-term investment in public safety and demonstrates the city’s continued commitment to serving Syracuse residents for generations to come.
