Extreme Heat Warning in Effect Through Friday for the Finger Lakes

The reading that’s been driving this forecast all morning is 100° — Watkins Glen’s projected high for today, the peak of a heat wave that has both NWS Buffalo and NWS Binghamton issuing Extreme Heat Warnings that blanket virtually every county in the Finger Lakes. These warnings are in effect through Friday at 8:00 PM.

This morning is already oppressive. Surface dewpoints are running in the low-to-mid 70s, and with temperatures already in the low-to-mid 70s before 6 AM, there’s almost no relief from last night. Geneva is sitting at 75° with 91% humidity. Ithaca, Corning, and Bath are all similar. The air has simply not cooled off.

Through the afternoon, temperatures climb to dangerous levels — Geneva near 95°, Auburn near 96°, Ithaca approaching 99°, and the valleys around Watkins Glen and Corning pushing toward 98 to 100°. The real story is heat index, however. NWS projects peak afternoon heat index values of 104 to 108°F across the warning areas. Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening — a slight hail threat is included in the forecast — but don’t count on storms to break the heat pattern meaningfully. Overnight lows stay in the mid 70s, providing almost no recovery.

Thursday holds more of the same, with Geneva potentially touching 98°. A slow easing begins Friday, but the warning holds through Friday evening. Independence Day Saturday looks more manageable near 85° with a higher chance of showers and drizzle — fireworks visibility that evening is questionable, with a 59% precipitation chance. Conditions gradually ease into next week.
