Dangerous Heat Blankets the Finger Lakes Through Friday

The heat index is what has me focused this morning — with 82% humidity already at 70°F in Geneva before 6 AM, the air feels more like a July afternoon in the Mid-Atlantic than an early Tuesday morning in the Finger Lakes. This is not a comfortable start to the day, and it gets significantly worse before it gets better.

A Heat Advisory is in effect through 8:00 PM tonight for the entire region, with heat index values expected to reach the upper 90s to near 105° this afternoon. But the bigger story is what comes after: an Extreme Heat Watch is already posted from both NWS Buffalo and NWS Binghamton, running through Friday at 8:00 PM, covering every county across the Finger Lakes from Tompkins and Schuyler in the south to Ontario and Cayuga in the north.

The driver is a powerful upper-level ridge building across the eastern U.S. through Thursday, with temperatures aloft climbing to levels that will push afternoon highs into the mid-to-upper 90s by Wednesday and Thursday. Geneva looks to hit 92° today, 96° Wednesday, and potentially 98° Thursday. Watkins Glen, sitting in its sheltered valley, is projected to reach 96° today — the region’s hottest spot this morning. Ithaca is not far behind at 95°.

Mornings will offer little relief. Overnight lows stay in the mid-to-upper 70s through the heat wave, meaning homes and buildings without air conditioning won’t cool down overnight. Humidity remains high throughout, so heat index values will consistently exceed actual air temperatures.

A warm front crossing the region today could spark scattered strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Precipitation chances are low on paper — around 10% — but the instability is there. Any storm that develops could bring strong winds and small hail. Stay weather-aware through the early evening.

Looking ahead to the holiday weekend: Independence Day on Saturday brings a 47% chance of thunderstorms as the ridge finally buckles and cooler, more unsettled air pushes in from Canada. Highs drop to 85° on Saturday — still warm, but a marked improvement over the week’s dangerous peak. Fireworks plans should be watched closely as that storm timing develops. Sunday and Monday see lingering shower chances with highs remaining in the mid-80s.
