The number that pulled me up short this morning is 96° — Watkins Glen’s projected high for Wednesday as the heart of this heat wave settles squarely over the Finger Lakes. We’re already in it: a Heat Advisory is in effect regionwide until 8:00 PM tonight, and an Extreme Heat Watch runs through Friday at 8:00 PM as the upper-level ridge strengthens and parks over the eastern U.S.
This morning is deceptively pleasant — skies mainly clear, temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s — but humidity is already running 80 to 90 percent in many spots, which means the air mass is loaded. By midafternoon, highs will surge to 92° in Geneva, 93° in Canandaigua and Auburn, and 95° in Ithaca. Watkins Glen, where valley topography tends to trap heat and limit ventilation, could touch 96°. Heat index values will push well above the actual air temperature through the afternoon hours.
NWS forecasters in both Buffalo and Binghamton are flagging scattered strong to severe thunderstorms possible this afternoon as a warm front crosses the region. Any storms that develop could be intense — keep an eye on radar through the late afternoon if you’re spending time outdoors.
Overnight lows tonight will offer little real relief, dropping only to around 70°. Wednesday brings the peak of the heat wave, with Geneva approaching 98° and the Extreme Heat Watch in full force. Thursday remains dangerously hot before the ridge begins to relax heading into the Fourth of July weekend.
Independence Day Saturday looks more unsettled — a 47 percent chance of storms and highs near 85° — making it a watch-the-sky kind of holiday. Have a backup plan for outdoor fireworks gatherings, and stay tuned for updated timing as the weekend pattern comes into sharper focus.
