Sitting here at the Weather Center just after sunrise, what jumps out isn’t today’s numbers — it’s the contrast between this pleasant Sunday morning and what the NWS is flagging as dangerous heat arriving in just 48 hours. For now, though, today is the comfortable one.
The morning is starting quietly across the Finger Lakes, with temps in the upper 50s to low 60s and skies mainly clear. Humidity is running high overnight — Bath and Corning are both sitting near saturation — but patchy fog should lift quickly after sunrise, especially in the valleys. By mid-morning, look for mostly sunny skies to take hold and temperatures to climb through the 70s.
Afternoon highs reach the low-to-mid 80s regionwide, with Geneva and Canandaigua topping out near 83° and Ithaca pushing toward 86°. Winds stay nearly calm all day — good news for race fans heading to Watkins Glen International for the IMSA Six Hours of The Glen, where conditions should be near-ideal through most of the afternoon. The one caveat: the NWS mentions that diurnal heating and lingering low-level moisture could spark a few isolated showers or pop-up storms across the Southern Tier from mid-afternoon into early evening — a small but nonzero risk at the track. Evening stays warm and muggy, with overnight lows settling around 60°.
Looking ahead, Monday stays partly cloudy with highs near 87°, then a significant pattern change arrives. A powerful upper-level ridge builds over the eastern U.S. Tuesday through Thursday, pushing highs into the mid-90s by Wednesday and Thursday — the NWS is using the word “dangerous” for the heat and humidity expected through much of next week. Thunderstorm chances also increase through the week and into Independence Day on Saturday, July 4th, when highs near 89° and a 40 percent chance of storms could complicate evening fireworks plans across the region.
