Warm afternoon gives way to a cooler, wetter weekend ahead

I’m watching a pleasant but brief warm spell play out across the region this afternoon — and the morning forecast is holding up well so far, with no real surprises. Temperatures at midday are already running into the upper 70s regionwide, and highs near 85° are still on track for Geneva, Ithaca, and Watkins Glen this afternoon.

No alerts are in effect. The overcast sky overhead is shallow and benign — it’s keeping things comfortable rather than oppressive, with humidity levels staying reasonable in the upper 20s to upper 30s.

This evening stays dry and mild, with temperatures dropping through the 60s after sunset around 8:42 PM. Friday actually climbs a step further, with highs pushing toward 89° in Geneva as a southerly flow draws moisture up ahead of an approaching cold front. Enjoy it — that front arrives late Friday and stalls over the weekend, bringing periodic showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. Saturday carries the better storm potential, with the NWS noting some storms could produce heavy downpours and gusty winds. Cooler and drier conditions return by early next week.
