Showers and Storms to Target the Finger Lakes This Weekend

I’m keeping a close eye on a weak surface low tracking near the region late Friday through Sunday — it’s shaping up to be the most significant weather story of the week. But tonight? Quiet and comfortable.

Clear skies continue as temperatures fall through the evening. Lows overnight will dip into the upper 40s for most of the region, with Geneva settling near 47° and Ithaca close behind at 46°. Elmira could bottom out around 43°, but no frost concerns — humidity is quite low and winds remain light from the northwest.

Tomorrow brings another pleasant day. Highs climb into the low-to-mid 80s under mainly cloudy skies, with Geneva reaching near 84°. Clouds thicken ahead of the approaching weather system, but Thursday stays dry.

The real story arrives Friday night into the weekend. A slow-moving cold front, combined with a secondary surface low tracking across the area Saturday, will push showers and thunderstorms through the Finger Lakes. NWS Buffalo is signaling a third to two-thirds of an inch of rainfall, with heavier totals possible in thunderstorm cells. The Weather Prediction Center has flagged a Marginal Risk for excessive runoff Saturday — worth watching given current stream levels. Seneca River near Seneca Falls is already running at 1,550 cfs.

No alerts are in effect tonight.
