Severe Storm Threat Returns to Southern Tier Tonight

Weather forecast for the Finger Lakes: Severe Storm Threat Returns to Southern Tier Tonight

Enjoy the warmth while it lasts. Temperatures across the region hit the upper 70s to mid-80s this afternoon — Watkins Glen and Ithaca touching 84° — but tonight brings a different story. The NWS Buffalo office has increased the severe thunderstorm threat for the Southern Tier this evening, with locally heavy rainfall possible overnight.

The setup: a persistent frontal zone draped across the Great Lakes is allowing multiple storm clusters to ripple through the region. We’re between rounds right now, but additional showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop later this evening, particularly from Corning and Bath northward toward the lakes.

Tomorrow brings more of the same — showers and storms likely through Thursday before a brief lull. Lows tonight stay mild, dropping to the low-to-mid 50s. No frost concerns. The very warm pattern holds through the weekend before significantly colder air pushes in by early next week.
