Bundle up — tonight will be the coldest night of the week by a wide margin. That compact clipper system that brought snow showers earlier today is pushing off the New England coast, leaving behind crystal-clear skies and a building high-pressure system over the eastern Great Lakes. That combination is a recipe for serious radiational cooling. Lows will drop into the teens across most of the region overnight, with spots like Bath and Auburn potentially touching the mid-teens by early Wednesday morning. Any exposed plants or tender vegetation will take a hard hit.
The good news: Wednesday brings a significant turnaround. Temperatures recover into the mid-to-upper 40s during the afternoon as that high slides east and winds ease. Sunshine should be generous. After tonight’s deep freeze, it’ll feel like a different season entirely by Wednesday afternoon.
