That cold, gray afternoon is just the opening act. Temperatures across the Finger Lakes will continue sliding overnight — most areas dropping into the low-to-mid 30s, with Auburn, Canandaigua, and Bath potentially touching 32°. No hard freeze alert is in effect, but a ground frost is likely region-wide.
The bigger story is snow. A compact clipper low will track over Lake Ontario late tonight, and the NWS Buffalo office is flagging lake enhancement and upslope flow as the northwest winds crank up. Expect scattered rain-snow mix to transition to all snow by the early morning hours. The Southern Tier — Corning, Bath, and the Schuyler County valleys — will see the heaviest lake-effect influence. Minor accumulations are expected, but roads could get slick before Tuesday’s commute.
Tuesday stays blustery and cold before drier, warmer air finally arrives Wednesday.
