If you were hoping for a pleasant spring Sunday, this isn’t it. Rain is on the way for the Finger Lakes today, with temperatures that felt almost mild this morning set to give way to a sharp cold snap that will last well into the week.
The morning started gray and breezy across the region, with temperatures in the mid-40s from Corning to Ithaca. Winds out of the west at 15–20 mph have made it feel noticeably raw. Highs this afternoon will top out near 61–66°, with Canandaigua and Penn Yan reaching the warmer end of that range before rain arrives in earnest. Expect 100% rain coverage by this afternoon and into the evening. Gusts could reach 25 mph through early evening before winds finally ease after sunset.
Here’s the bigger story: a deep cold trough digging into eastern North America will drag temperatures down dramatically by tomorrow. Monday’s high in Geneva reaches only 39°, and by Tuesday the region is looking at highs near 34° with scattered snow showers likely — particularly in the higher terrain of the Southern Tier around Bath and Corning. Overnight lows dip into the mid-20s Tuesday night. Frost risk will be real, especially in the lake valleys.
Stream flows are running high across the region — Cayuga Inlet at Ithaca is at 7.07 feet, and the Seneca River near Seneca Falls is pushing 2,430 cfs — so additional rain today could keep area waterways elevated into next week.
Looking ahead: conditions dry out and moderate nicely by Wednesday with highs near 53°, then a warmer stretch returns Thursday and Friday with temperatures climbing back to the upper 60s.
