The 19th Annual Courage Bowl held at SUNY Brockport, was an afternoon of excitement, unity, and a celebration of courage. During halftime, Gary Mervis, Founder of Camp Good Days & Special Times, presented the Father Joe Lanzalaco Memorial Courage Award to two distinguished individuals whose courage, strength, and determination serve as an example to the children and families supported by Camp Good Days.
This year’s recipients, United States Marshal Charles Salina and Michael Lawandus, were recognized for their courageous actions and unwavering commitment to making a difference.
Charles Salina, who has served as the U.S. Marshal for the Western District of New York since 2011, is widely respected for his leadership and dedication to building a stronger and safer community. His resilience and unwavering determination to overcome obstacles have inspired many, making him a role model for all those around him.
Michael Lawandus, who served the Rochester community for many years as the ATF Resident Agent in Charge before retiring, has demonstrated true courage throughout his life, both during his distinguished career and beyond. His enduring commitment to supporting those around him and facing challenges with unwavering strength continues to set an example for everyone he meets.
“Charles and Michael have shown courage not just in their professions but in how they live their lives—by never letting adversity stand in their way and continuing to make a difference in the world around them,” said Gary Mervis, Founder of Camp Good Days. “Their character, strength, and perseverance inspire all of us at Camp Good Days.”
The Courage Bowl, an annual football game between SUNY Brockport and St. John Fisher University, is more than just a game—it’s a celebration of community spirit and a powerful symbol of support for children and families affected by cancer or sickle cell anemia. Now in its 19th year, the event raises critical funds for Camp Good Days, helping to continue its mission of providing support, programs, and hope to those in need.
This year’s Courage Bowl not only highlighted the action on the field but also honored remarkable individuals like Salina and Lawandus, whose courage inspires others to make a difference.
