The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for much of Central New York, the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, and North Country through 3 p.m. Thursday.
The watch was issued at 10 a.m. and includes several counties across the Finger Lakes region, including Cayuga, Seneca, Yates, Schuyler, Tompkins, Steuben, and Onondaga counties.
A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware and be prepared to take shelter if warnings are issued.
In addition to the Finger Lakes, the watch covers a broad portion of New York State, including Albany, Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Oswego, Otsego, Saratoga, Schenectady, Tioga, Warren, Washington, and several other counties.
